Organizations Attempting to Save FreshWater Biomes
The Nature Conservancy
They work to protect rivers and lakes. They attempt to reduce the impact of dams. The Conservancy is developing sophisticated financial tools that gather investments from water users and direct the funding toward conservation of key lands upstream that filter and regulate water supply. They also create innovative water funds that help finance the protection of watersheds which supply drinking water to cities.
Conservation International
They create projects that integrate science and natural resource management to inform policy and land-use decisions regarding dam development, agricultural development, watershed management, and tourism development. They also increase knowledge of management alternatives, incorporate freshwater values into development decisions, strengthen markets for freshwater services, promote enabling policies and governance, and scale up action for the conservation of entire natural freshwater systems, from headwater to estuary.
Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
This program seeks to advance the conservation and restoration of freshwater ecosystems in North America, with emphasis on the Great Lakes and, to a lesser extent, portions of the southeastern U.S. They give grants to key organizations active in freshwater issues, particularly state-level and regional groups, to build their organizational capacity.
American Rivers
They ensure clean water supplies, revitalizing fish and wildlife habitat, improving recreation, and leaving a legacy of healthy rivers for generations to come. They remove unsafe and outdated dams, they also work with communities to stop polluted run off and sewage spills.
